Music & Arts ReSound (M.A.R.S.) is a festival based on interdisciplinary cooperation between different forms of contemporary music, applied arts, philosophy, contemporary science and technology, with the target of creating platforms for internationally established musicians and artists of all kinds to promote their work and open new perspectives on seeing music through cross-artistic pairings. In its second year, Festival M.A.R.S. will be heading to three major cities around the world (Berlin, Los Angeles, and Shanghai).
As science seeks to better our understanding of the world, music and art allow us to express how our rapidly evolving reality affects us as humans. This is the mission of M.A.R.S.: To explore this new vision by combining science and technology with the expression of music and art.

OCT. 5 FESTIVAL OPENING: TELEPORMARTIAN

(Door opens at 7pm. Show starts at 8pm)

With MARS Collective and ThisPlay

Four commissioned composers: Genoel Lilienstern, Katharina Rosenberger, Ying Wang and Wen Liu.

TeleporMartian is constructing a new world through the latest techniques of 3D hologram projections, video mapping, virtual reality, and interactive projections with performers, granting spectators access to a one of a kind virtual space. And what exactly does this new world mean to us? It creates a unique program by commissioning four internationally emerged composers. This new world is the result of a pioneering collaboration between composers and technologists, expanding the possibilities of artistic expression and technical innovation.

Program:

Genoel Lilienstern : Big Picture (2018) for Soprano, Ensemble, Electronics and 3D Hologram Projections (World Premiere)
Ying Wang : Black Hole Big Bang (2018)  for Soprano, Ensemble, Electronics, 3D Hologram Projections and Video Mapping (World Premiere)
Wen Liu : The Echo of Entropy (2018) for Soprano, Ensemble, Electronics, 3D Hologram  Projections and Video Mapping (World Premiere)
Katharina Rosenberger: In the Dream that I Dreamed, You Awoke (2018) for Soprano, Ensemble, Electronics, 3D Hologram Projections (World Premiere)

OCT. 6 MULTIVERSE (PART I)
(Door opens at 7pm. Show starts at 8pm)

With JESSE GILBERT and MIGUEL ATWOOD-FERGUSON

Post-Show by DJ Jesse Blake

Atwood-Ferguson and Gilbert present an evening of music and image, featuring musical compositions and improvisations within an immersive performance environment defined by panoramic projections of audio-reactive visuals that surrounds both audience and performers.  Building upon years of ongoing creative dialogue, the duet explores works from classical repertoire as well as Atwood-Fergusons original compositions for acoustic viola and electric violin, all fed in real-time to Gilberts visual instrument, SpectralGL, which transforms sound into dynamic visual landscapes that are mapped back onto the performance space.  The resulting perceptual feedback loop is designed to bring the audience on a journey of discovery along with the artists, transforming their experience from that of passive listeners to co-creators of experience, elucidating the mystery and power of music and image to inspire and suggest new realities and possibilities.

OCT. 7 MULTIVERSE (PART II)

(Door opens at 7pm. Show starts at 8pm)

With JESSE GILBERT and QUARTETTO FANTASTICO

Chris Woods   violin
Paul Cartwright  violin
Miguel Atwood-Ferguson   viola
Peter Jacobson  cello

Post-Show by DJ Jesse Blake

Atwood-Ferguson and Gilbert are joined by the members of Quartetto Fantastico, widening the circle of musical exploration through the power of a modern string quartet playing at the highest level of improvisation and modern composition.  The string quartet will perform inside a cube of light, with translucent projections on four sides that will explore the intuitive and emotional connections between the musicians through a mix of live camera and abstract animation composed in real-time with SpectralGL.  This immersive installation will allow audience members to explore the performance from any angle, transcending the traditional proscenium arrangement to create a completely personalized sound and visual experience.  As the inner performance space is unfolded and echoed through the overlapping media landscape, a multiverse of individual perspectives can be explored, each containing a kernel of the musical moment as it reverberates across space and time.

OCT. 7 MULTIVERSE FINALE

(Door opens at 7pm. Show starts at 8pm)

With AMY KAPS and KORDUROY

www.amykaps.com
My art, my world, my life is multi-faceted. I break it down and put it back together. Color. Space. Time. Emotion. Thought. Elements are re-imagined to create a new whole.

The Biggest Band YouVe Probably Never Heard Of!
Korduroy is a progressive-soul act but refuses to fit into that simply titled box. With 15 rotating members, which includes two trumpeters, two guitarists and two percussionists, its easy to see how they defy one single genre and produce their own groove music.

Festival MARS 2018 is fiscally sponsored by Fulcrum Arts 501(c)3.

BEAR + Festival M.A.R.S.

  • Angel City Brewery + Art Share LA (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

BEAR + Festival MARS: Inaugural 10-Day Music, Art, Technology Festival in DTLA's trendy Arts District. Hosted at Angel City Brewery and Art Share LA

Music & Arts ReSound (M.A.R.S.) is a festival based on interdisciplinary cooperation between different forms of contemporary music, applied arts and independent film, with the target of creating platforms for internationally established musicians and artists of all kinds to promote their work and open new perspectives on seeing music through cross-artistic pairings. These carefully curated and hand-picked events will expand musical imagination by blurring the borders between music and other applied arts. Artists involved will choose a concept and theme that will govern their collaborative process, and foster a wider array of interests for audiences than those of a usual contemporary music festival. Visual art, film, fashion and dance will bring an understanding and conceptualization of music to a higher level of awareness for both the performers and the audience. The festival will provide the necessary infrastructure for creating and fostering such collaborative platforms, and will do so in all major cities around the globe.

The first installation of M.A.R.S. will focus on Los Angeles, bringing together the artistic sensibility and expertise of local artists who live and work in and around the city, and attesting to the factor of migration that this SoCal capital sees every day.

The second installation will similarly take place in and focus on a specific metropolitan area, Berlin. However, as we move into the second installation a year later, its birth place and forefather M.A.R.S. LA will not cease to exist. Instead, M.A.R.S. Festival will take over Berlin and Los Angeles at the same time, connecting the musicians, artists, and audiences through the means of Virtual Reality – merging and blurring the geographical realities of the two cities.

Moving on to the future of the festival, M.A.R.S., is to create an interconnected web of places, arts, musicians, performers and audiences, all the while maintaining and honoring both its roots and newer generations of the festival that will eventually be present in the major cities of the world.
